For as long as I can remember, carrying debt has felt like lugging around a bag of bricks. Sure, some of those bricks were “worth it” (hello, family vacations and home improvements), but others? Not so much. Regardless of how they got there, those bricks weigh heavy, and I’ve decided that 2025 is the year I finally set them down.
Becoming debt-free is a BIG goal, but I’m ready to tackle it head-on. Here’s my plan, my motivation, and why I think this year is going to be the one that changes everything.
What Does Debt-Free Mean to Me?
For me, becoming debt-free means no more credit card balances, no personal loans hanging over my head, and (if the stars align) eventually purchasing our forever home. Long story short between selling our home for under-market value, medical bills, credit cards, school loans it quickly piled on. That number might seem overwhelming, but to me, it’s just a starting point.
Debt-free means freedom. It means more family “yes days” without worrying if I should have said “no” to that little splurge. It means less stress and more savings. It means working toward the life I’ve always dreamed of—and setting an example for my kids that hard work and smart choices pay off.
The Plan to Tackle Debt in 2025
Like any good project, a debt-free journey starts with a plan. Here’s what I’m doing:
1. Hustling Harder Than Ever
I’m taking every opportunity to create multiple income streams, This does not Include my husband, Tom's hustles:
Writing Books: As a genre-hopping author, I’ve got big plans to write 11 more children’s books this year. (Hello, “How to Cure a Mine Monster” fans—get ready for more!)
Cozy Mysteries: My first Christmas-themed cozy mystery is already in the works, and I’m diving headfirst into the cozy mystery world with more stories to come.
Blogging: I’m building my blog (This Sporadic Life ) to provide value while monetizing with affiliate links and ads.
Outschool Classes: Teaching Disney trivia and social groups is a natural fit for my skills as a teacher and Disney enthusiast.
VIPKid Teacher: Leveraging my teaching experience, I’m offering engaging online classes for kids around the world, earning flexible income from home.
Affiliate Marketing: Sharing products I love (and already use!) through affiliate links on social media and blogs. Whether it’s Disney gear or cozy mystery must-haves, I’m all in.
Amazon Creator Program: I’m diving into creating short, helpful video reviews and lists on Amazon to earn commissions through the platform’s affiliate program.
Comfort Creator on Social Media: I’m establishing myself as a cozy, relatable creator across TikTok, Instagram, and Threads. Sharing my life as an author, mom, and Disney fan is a natural fit—and my audience loves it!
2. Selling What I Don’t Need
Time to Marie Kondo the house! If it doesn’t spark joy (or serve a purpose), it’s out. I’ve started listing items on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and local buy/sell groups. You’d be amazed at how fast things can add up when you’re consistent.
3. Saying “No” to What Doesn’t Serve the Goal
Just like choosing between a YES day and a party, I’m choosing to say “no” to things that don’t align with my debt-free mission. That means:
Skipping unnecessary subscriptions.
Meal planning like a boss (goodbye, last-minute takeout).
Finding budget-friendly ways to entertain the family.
4. Using Every Extra Dollar Wisely
Every bonus, side hustle paycheck, or extra income goes straight toward debt. No exceptions. Even the small wins matter—every $20 here and there chips away at the big picture.
Why 2025 Is The Year
It’s not just about paying off the debt; it’s about changing the way I think about money. This year, I’m focused on building habits that will last a lifetime. I want to celebrate financial wins the same way we celebrate YES days—with creativity, family togetherness, and joy.
I know it won’t always be easy. Some days, that bag of bricks will feel heavier than ever. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, hard work and determination can turn even the biggest goals into reality.
